Concept
The Global Center for Innovation and Learning (GCFIL), a USA-based development agency, has launched the Bangladesh Literacy Alliance (BLA) with the vision to eliminate illiteracy in Bangladesh by 2040 through innovative, collaborative, technology-enabled, and locally adapted interventions. As a flagship initiative under BLA, the National Teachers Conference aims to inspire a national dialogue on how to cultivate a reading culture as a cornerstone of quality education.
The theme of the conference, “Creating a Reading Culture for Quality Education,” reflects the critical connection between reading and lifelong learning. A culture of reading is one in which reading is valued, encouraged, and integrated into daily life and the educational environment. It fosters students’ personal, social, and academic identities, leading to holistic development.
Research consistently shows that cultivating a love for reading requires community-wide engagement. Teachers, parents, educational institutions, and cultural organizations must work collectively to support children’s reading habits. This culture is not built overnight but emerges through consistent leadership, availability of diverse reading materials, student enthusiasm, and parental support.
Quality education is inseparable from a strong reading foundation. While classroom teachers play the primary role in this process, parents, guardians, and community leaders also contribute to shaping students’ reading experiences. In light of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4), which emphasize inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all by 2030, professional excellence among teachers in Bangladesh becomes more urgent than ever.
This conference will serve as a platform for sharing best practices, fostering innovation, and elevating the role of reading in achieving quality education. It will highlight the synergy between teacher professional development and a robust reading culture.
